漢語和英語兩種語言之間最基本的區別在於句法方面。英語重形合 (hypo taxis)，句中各意群、成分都用適當的連接詞 (connective)、介詞 (preposition)、非限定性動詞短語 (phrase)或從句 (clause)等來表達其相互關系，因而結構嚴謹但缺乏彈性；而漢語句法則重意合(parataxis)，句中各意群、成分通過內在的聯系貫穿在壹起，不壹定或很少用連接詞、介詞，也沒有非限定性動詞短語或從句，因此結構松散，但富於彈性，從句子整體來看，意義清楚，不會產生誤解。
