Abandoned wife sues for her half
A woman is seeking 50 percent interest in nine properties in Yuen Long acquired by her husband, who left her and their six children behind in Hong Kong to pursue a new life in the United Kingdom nearly 30 years ago.
According to a writ filed by Tang Oi-hei, she married Cheung Hong-nin, also known as Cheung Hon-nin, in 1959 and they have six children, including their second son, Cheung Chun-mo, who suffers from severe mental problems and requires intensive care.
Around 1979, the husband left the family behind to "search for fortune" in the UK, where he became a cook.
Tang claims she was told she would receive 50 percent interest in three properties if she took care of the six children, contributed to the family expenses and managed the properties.
In 1998, the husband acquired six other properties and made the same offer to her. But he later refused to confirm the wife's interest.
Tang seeks a court declaration that she is the beneficial owner of 50 percent of the entire estate, other relief and costs.
